Question 05 · The answer, first
How high an ATAR do you actually need?
A higher ATAR can open real choices.
An ATAR is a relative rank used for some tertiary admissions. It is not a percentage mark or a measure of everything a student has learned.
No single ATAR is enough for everyone. Enough depends on the student's meaningful destinations, the admission mechanism and its conditions, what more rank would change, and what pursuing it would add or displace.
This is not an instruction to aim lower. It is a way to identify what a higher rank would actually do.
A decision sequence, not an ATAR ladder
Enough for what?
- ATAR→
- What does the number mean?→
- Which destination?→
- What does more rank actually change?→
- What does pursuing it add or displace?
Meaningful destinations can include ambitious choices and can change. The student's goals remain part of the decision.
Chapter 01 · Canonical Discovery 01
Learning is not the same as rank
If everyone learns more, can everyone also move towards the top of the rank?
Capability
People can improve across subjects
- Math
- Science
- English
Illustrative capabilities, not measured student results.
People can all understand more or do things they could not do before.
ATAR rank
Top positions stay limited
Conceptual position, not a statistical distribution.
An ATAR rank describes where one result sits compared with the reference population.
Chapter 02 · Canonical Discovery 02
First, identify what the number means
Does a published number describe eligibility, past competition or a future promise?
- Raw ATAR
Tells youUnadjusted rank
Does not tell youIt is not the complete selection decision.
- Selection rank
Tells youRank used after applicable course adjustments
Does not tell youThere is no one adjusted ATAR that applies to every application.
- Minimum eligibility
Tells youA condition for consideration
Does not tell youIt is not necessarily an offer threshold.
- Historical lowest selection rank
Tells youA result of a specified completed offer process
Does not tell youIt is not a fixed requirement for the next intake.
- Prospective guarantee
Tells youA conditional provider promise for eligible applicants
Does not tell youIt does not remove prerequisites, applicant rules or other conditions.
One course · two different questions
Both Monash Law numbers can be correct.
They describe different periods, different number types and different applicant groups. These numbers answer different questions.
historical
2026
95
Lowest selection rank
Retrospective outcome of the specified completed offer process; not a future cutoff or guarantee.
prospective
2027
85
Monash Guarantee
Eligible applicants only
Only for scheme-eligible applicants meeting prerequisites and the full conditions; not universal.
This does not mean “Monash Law requires 85”. A conditional guarantee is not a universal course requirement.
Chapter 03 · Canonical Discovery 03
What would another point actually change?
Does a higher result create a new benefit for this student's actual shortlist?
Four named offers · not a universal course ladder
What changes for this particular offer?
For an eligible applicant, reaching a named threshold can turn competition below it into a conditional guarantee at it. The figure says nothing about course quality, what anyone deserves, or the lowest ATAR that might receive an offer.
Semester 1 2027 guarantee
Information Technology
ATAR70
2027 guaranteed ATAR for eligible applicants
Domestic Australian Year 12 applicant; relevant application, prerequisites and essential criteria; places remaining; highest eligible VTAC preference. Below 70 may still compete.

Engineering (Honours)
ATAR75
2027 guaranteed ATAR for eligible applicants
Domestic Australian Year 12 applicant; relevant application, prerequisites and essential criteria; places remaining; highest eligible VTAC preference. Below 75 may still compete.
Semester 1 2027 guarantee
Commerce
ATAR80
2027 guaranteed ATAR for eligible applicants
Domestic Australian Year 12 applicant; relevant application, prerequisites and essential criteria; places remaining; highest eligible VTAC preference. Below 80 may still compete. The shortlist inference is hypothetical.
Semester 1 2027 guarantee
Laws
ATAR88
2027 guaranteed ATAR for eligible applicants
Domestic Australian Year 12 applicant; relevant application, prerequisites and essential criteria; places remaining; highest eligible VTAC preference. Below 88 may still compete. This boundary matters only if Laws is an acceptable destination.
Chapter 04 · Canonical Discovery 04
Another route is a different contract
If direct entry is missed, what exactly does the alternative route promise?
Direct entry missed
“There is another pathway” does not mean the same outcome is guaranteed.
Each alternative is a different contract. Check what it promises after the first course, how much study and credit it involves, and whether another selection process remains.
Route type 01
RMIT Associate Degree in IT → Bachelor of IT
- Different study sequence
- Guaranteed entry after completion
- Entry
- Guaranteed entry to the Bachelor of Information Technology after successful completion of the Associate Degree in Information Technology.
- Credit
- 192 RMIT credit points toward the bachelor.
- Time
- 2 + 1 years — nominal. Elective or subject sequencing and the commencement semester can extend the final stage; the timetable is not guaranteed.
Packaged progression and separate applications
Packaged progression and standard entry follow different application steps. The guarantee follows successful completion of the associate degree, not admission to it.
Route type 02
Box Hill nursing diploma → Deakin Bachelor of Nursing
- Credit, not guaranteed entry
- Entry
- Deakin admission is not guaranteed. Applicants must have completed Box Hill Institute's Diploma of Nursing within the previous five years and hold current NMBA enrolled-nurse registration.
- Credit
- Eight Deakin credit points under the named articulation agreement. Credit arrangements can change.
- Time
- No fixed total duration is established here. Further Bachelor of Nursing study is required if admitted; remaining time depends on the admitted course plan and recognised credit.
Route type 03
Prior tertiary study → Monash Laws transfer application
- Competitive transfer
- Prior university study required
- Entry
- Prior university study and distinction-level results are required for competitive consideration. Admission is not guaranteed, no place is reserved, and prerequisites still apply.
- Credit
- Credit is assessed individually; no Monash credit amount is guaranteed.
- Time
- No fixed total duration is established here. Remaining study depends on the individual credit assessment and course requirements after admission.
Internal and external transfer conditions
Internal transfer consideration requires 0.5–2 full-time-equivalent years of prior degree study; external consideration requires 1–2 years. The application routes are separate, and relevant prior study is assessed for credit rather than assumed to transfer in full.
Chapter 05 · Canonical Discovery 05
What else could the same effort support?
What learning and access might the next effort produce, and what else could that effort support?
Study can be valuable
That effort might deepen a student's understanding, improve their confidence with a subject and help them reach a course they value. Those can be worthwhile benefits.
These benefits can overlap. A student might love a difficult subject and gain both knowledge and a stronger result. Better teaching or support might save time rather than consume more of it.
Other uses can be valuable
But the same time might otherwise go towards building a project, reading more widely, exploring an occupation, practising music, spending time with others or resting.
The question is not whether those activities are always better than study. It is whether we have considered them at all.
What will the student learn?
Understanding, fluency and capability, not merely the resulting rank
What additional opportunity might the result provide?
The specific course, guarantee, competitive advantage or award, plus uncertainty about reaching it
What would they otherwise do with that time?
The relevant competing use of time or resources and its possible value
Chapter 06 · Canonical Discoveries 06 + 07
Admission opens a starting opportunity, not a complete future
Does a more selective entry point prove the best future, and does uncertainty mean maximising rank at any cost?
Admission evidence establishes a starting opportunity, not a lifetime outcome. Preserve a revisable range of meaningful options, then check what more rank changes and what pursuing it involves.
Part 01 · Starting point [11]
The hardest course to enter is not automatically the best future.
That hope involves several steps: entering a course, completing it, entering the occupation and developing a career. Evidence about the first step does not prove the whole journey.
The narrower lesson is important: the first qualification is a starting point, not a complete forecast of the person's future.
Nor does every worthwhile career need to maximise income. A student's interests and the kind of work and life they want belong in the question too.
The doctor and plumber example is a method check, not a career result
Consider a comparison between medicine and plumbing.
A fair comparison would not follow a medical graduate through years of professional advancement while freezing a plumber at their first qualified wage. It would allow both people to develop over the same period.
That could include deeper expertise, further qualifications, skilled employment or business ownership where relevant. It would also include the investment, time and setbacks involved.
We must not assume that every doctor becomes a surgeon or every plumber builds a profitable business. Possible success is not the same as what someone choosing the path can reasonably expect. Nor should we assume both paths offer the same chances of advancement.
We have not completed that career comparison here. Neither pathway has been shown to be the financial winner.
Admissions evidence establishes a starting opportunity, not lifetime return or personal suitability. The doctor or surgeon versus plumber or business-owner idea is only a methodological boundary if useful, never a visual or return comparison. No wages, wealth, hours, training-duration, licensing, business-success, progression-probability, equal-probability or occupational-winner claim is available.
Part 02 · Revisable choices [12]
Not knowing the future does not make “more” a complete goal.
A parent could reasonably ask: what happens if the child changes their mind?
Perhaps a demanding course will become important later. Perhaps the preferred campus is the only practical one. Perhaps another pathway will require extra study or another uncertain application.
Those are good reasons not to set a rigid target based only on today's favourite course. A student does not need to choose a lifelong career while still at school.
A better approach is to keep a range of meaningful choices under review. Include ambitious destinations the student genuinely values. Check what each requires and whether the alternatives would actually be acceptable.
This must not become an excuse to restrict a child's aspirations. Current results or family circumstances should not decide which futures they are allowed to consider. The student needs a voice in the discussion.
Enough rank for a particular offer does not mean enough learning for a life.
Reaching one admissions requirement is not a reason to stop developing. It is a reason to think carefully about what to develop next.
Future preferences, intervention gains, use of options, alternative success and displaced value are uncertain; no relevant probabilities are estimated. A possible benefit does not justify every investment, and a possible trade-off does not prove it unwise. Preserve revisable meaningful and stretch destinations, the student's agency, and the distinction between local sufficiency and a life optimum. No universal buffer, stopping rule, optimal ATAR, allocation or spending recommendation is established.
The short answer
There is no single number everyone needs.
Which meaningful options does this student want to preserve, what do those routes actually require, and what would pursuing more rank add—or displace—in their education?
Read the bounded conclusion
There is no single ATAR everyone needs, and success in education cannot mean everyone occupying the highest relative ranks. ATAR serves a real but limited admissions purpose. For a specified applicant and route, more rank can change eligibility, competition, a guarantee, location or funding. Some meaningful benefits occur at very high thresholds; others are already covered at substantially lower ranks. Missing direct entry may change the route rather than eliminate the destination, but alternatives must be checked rather than assumed. Additional rank is not the whole value of learning, and neither its possible benefit nor an uncertain future settles what every extra hour should be used for. The appropriate comparison identifies the access being pursued, the learning gained, the alternatives displaced and the student's own goals. Admission to a selective course does not, by itself, establish the future they will build.
